MusicSnobbery.com presents Soundpool and Bell @ Joe’s Pub, 7/25/08

Kudos to my main man Chris of MusicSnobbery.com for a successful first “MusicSnobbery.com Presents” show on Friday night. Fresh off the success of his Third Anniversary Show that featured Moby (yes, that Moby), Chris has been able to parlay that success into his own show on HD Radio (The Ultimate Mix-Tape) and now, curating shows at Joe’s Pub.

First up on the Joe’s Pub stage was Bell, with songs familiar yet fresh, that live somewhere in the neighborhood between Regina Spektor and Bjork. In addition to songs off her Bell EP, she included a stripped-down, melancholy version of the Go-Go’s “Vacation”. The highlight of the evening was a funny piano ditty that she sang for Chris, as if she was recording the introduction to some bizarro Mary Poppins-esque MusicSnobbery instructional CD. “Welcome to MusicSNOBBERY dot com PRESENTS…”. You had to be there.

Soundpool closed the show with a rollicking set of their blend of shoegaze, electronica, and psychedelia and swirly lights and visuals. I was familiar with some of their music from listening on the Internet, but was pleasantly surprised with how much the songs groove in a live setting, something I normally wouldn’t associate with shoegaze-type music. They may well be New York’s answer to Stereolab, and they do it well.

I had a minor hand in the proceedings, acting earlier in my usual role as his commissioned designer. Here’s the artwork I did for him that was turned into an 11″ x 17″ poster and a quarter-sheet handout:
