Fooderating: Sponge Candy Challenge

First beef on weck, now sponge candy? What is that?

Sponge candy is another Buffalo-area treat that is a must if you’re ever in Western New York. It’s a cube of toffee covered in chocolate, only the toffee is like a crunchy cotton candy. It’s also known as sponge toffee (among other names) elsewhere in the world. For example, in Australia, we (carefully) stuffed our suitcases full of Violet Crumble when we were there in 2006.

Back in Buffalo, we made our pilgrimage, as always, to Watson’s Chocolates in Kenmore, NY, for a couple boxes of sponge.

But this time, we also made a stop at Platter’s Chocolates in North Tonawanda for a box of Platter’s to try.

Earlier in the day, a debate had broken out in the Bradley household over which sponge candy was actually better. And now that we had our sponge candy ready, enter my sister-in-law and sponge candy enthusiast, Vicky:

We conducted a blind taste test, and Vicky correctly identified which one was

Platters...

and which one was Watson’s.

And the winner of the Great Sponge Candy Challenge of 2008, with higher rated chocolate and sponge:

But really, when it comes to a sponge candy challenge, there are no losers. We’re all winners. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
