Fooderating: Beef on Weck

One thing I love is going to new places and sampling the local fare, so when I first arrived in Buffalo to meet the extended family of my then-girlfriend (now-wife) a few years ago, I was happy to be presented with a plate of beef on weck.

Beef on what?

Let’s all shuffle off to Buffalo (our motto: “Hey, we’ve got other great food besides hot wings!”) and learn more!

“Weck”, short for kummelweck, or kimmelweck, is a Kaiser-like roll topped with pretzel salt and caraway seeds – sort of like the roll version of an everything bagel. Pile on some hot roast beef and some horseradish, and there you have it. Deliciousness ahoy!

Reason enough to shuffle off to Buffalo

We had plenty of fireworks this July 4th in Buffalo, courtesy of local favorite Miller’s Horseradish. Various people around the table enjoying their beef on weck would abruptly stop, scrunch their faces, and then feel the horseradish leave scorch marks on their brains. The horseradish is that strong…and so delicious!

(Side note: Beef on weck is featured in the PBS documentary Sandwiches That You Will Like, which also includes an appearance by yours truly pontificating on the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.)

And no trip to see the Bradley side of my wife’s family in Western New York would be complete without more of the delicious fare there, so more Fooderating posts are coming!
