King of the Court

In a stunning selection at tonight’s NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings took Rider University forward/center Jason Thompson at number 12. Projected to get picked late in the first round or in the second round,  he jumped all the way into the lottery. Not bad for the first player from my old school ever to be selected in the NBA draft.

He’s got game. MAAC Player of the Year. In his junior and senior years, averaged 20+ and 10+ and won MAAC Defensive Player of the Year twice. Say what you will about mid-major conference guys, but he averaged 16 and 5 in his three career games against Top 25 teams. A solid big man who can rebound and defend with good offensive touch will always have a job in the NBA, especially high-energy, character guys. Tremendous upside potential! And a South Jersey guy too. Go Jason!

This was truly a ‘shock the world’ moment for Thompson and the Rider Broncs! While I expected him to go in the late first-to-mid second round, he wasn’t even invited to the Green Room (shame on Commish. Stern). In reading so-called expert analysis, there are a lot of haters out there solely based on some more household names available at the time. But read the ‘Sacramento Bee,’ the Kings’ GM has a great eye for talent. JT held his own vs. LeBron at camps, he has four years of college experience, is very mature, versatile, and the Kings’ GM has a keen eye for talent.
